THINGS TO DO
"EL TOTUMO" MUD VOLCANO / VOLCAN DE LODO EL TOTUMO
El Totumo Mud Volcano is a mud volcano located near sea level in northern Colombia in the municipality of Santa Catalina. A local tourist destination, popular for its alleged healing mud bath, it receives most of its visitors from nearby Cartagena. We've never tried it, but it sounds like an interesting adventure!
CASTILLO DE SAN FELIPE/ SAN FELIPE CASTLE
San Felipe de Barajas Castle, built in 1656. Its strategic location prevented foreign troops - and the occasional European pirate - from setting ashore and circling the back of Cartagena's (now) Old Town.

GETSEMANI
The Bohemian center of Cartagena. Where actually "Cartageneros" still live and enjoy a Sunday afternoon watching tv with their front doors wide open. Getsemani has a vibrant art scene, you'll find incredible graffiti everywhere. Every Sunday at around 8 pm you can join a two-hour Zumba class in Plaza del la Santisima. Everyone is welcome!
ISLAS DEL ROSARIO
There are 27 islands in this beautiful archipelago; however, I am not sure how many of the 27 you can actually visit. To get to any of them, you’ll need to catch a boat from el muelle, close to the Convention Center. All the boats leave from the same place, so it’s easy to find. The total trip from Cartagena to the islands takes about an hour, depending on which island you’re going to, and you’ll need to pay a small fee, as the islands are part of a national park. Even so, the islands are well worth both the fee and the boat trip. The Islas del Rosario are great for sun bathing as well as water activities like swimming and snorkeling, and unlike Bocagrande, Islas del Rosario do offer the stereotypical pearl white sand and crystalline turquoise waters.
EL MUSEO DE ORO ZENU/ THE ZENU GOLD MUSEUM
Housed in a charming colonial house on the Plaza Bolivar rescued by Colombia's central bank, the Zenú gold museum boasts a priceless insight into the pre-Colombian culture of the Caribbean
ENTRANCE IS FREE, so enjoy :)
LAS BOVEDAS
Las Bóvedas means "The Vaults" In Spanish, and was built for military purposes in the late 18th century to store munitions. It was used as a dungeon during the civil wars of the independence era period, and it's said that at high tide, the prisoners would be up to their knees in sea water.
PLAYA BLANCA, BARU
Beautiful and pristine blue water and white soft sand beach. The only downside to this beach is that it can get overcrowded with tourist and lots of vendors trying to sell you all kinds of things(mostly overpriced). If you don't mind a busy beach, it's worth going.
PALACIO DE LA INQUISICION
The Spanish tickler, the guillotine, the rack and the witches' scale are just four of the friendly artefacts on display on this glorious palace built for the Spanish Inquisition. Disturbing and interesting at the same time.
